Back to the blog

We have been slowed down by very un-spring-like weather. From Gap we travelled around the lake in Geneva, Evian is a gorgeous place...where the bottled water originated....lovely hotels on the lake edge and thermal pools...everything Rotorua should be. Hard case border control in Geneva as we moved from the French side of the lake to the Swiss, two customs officers standing on the side of road having a smoke, we clearly weren't smuggling anything much i guess so just waved us on, a few trucks were being stopped but not all. A very nice police man with no English then stopped to help us decide which way to go over the next Massif range toward Germany. it was pretty funny, lots of facials and frowning and blowing and finally made up his mind what we were to do. we did as we were told and it was awesome but blimmin cold. Switzerland also a beautiful country but too high up and cold for me, all very neat and tidy and expensive. Next stop Bern, then Basel (still spending Swiss francs) then around to Mulhouse (France again). Had to stop there for the night as too tired to cope with the cross into a different language and roading...it was a good decision as we found out the next day as we hit the race track of the German Autobahn. No speed limit except saw a sign saying slow down to 130 to go through a tunnel. There is a real protocol of trucks on the inside lane, a steady pace in the middle but watch out for trucks moving into it to pass a slow truck...and as fast as you can go in the outside lane. We were being easily overtaken and we were doing 140kph in the middle lane. Interesting that the trucks have to park up every night after 10pm and not on the autobahn at all saturday or sunday....its just part of life here.
